Ways to become the best boxer

Ways to become the best boxer

Professional boxers are career athletes at the very top of the sport. For many people, boxing is a way of life and extreme sacrifices are made in pursuit of becoming a professional fighter. Whether you’re already working on it or want to begin to pursue your boxing dreams, this is the best time to start taking the steps you need to become a professional boxer.

Who is a boxer?

Boxers compete individually in hand-to-hand fighting matches within a square ring encased by parallel rows of rope. Matches are officiated by referees within the ring and consist of pre-determined periods of time called rounds. The winner is determined by knockout, injury, technical knockout (TKO), judges’ scores, or referee decision. Because of the violent and potentially harmful nature of the sport, injury is common. Boxers wear cushioned gloves and also protective headgear at the amateur and Olympic levels.

Take the first step – Get Training

If you want to become a professional boxer start your training. Choose a boxing club to join that is affiliated with a national boxing organization and that also has a reputation for training fighters. You need a gym that’s dedicated to boxing and potentially other martial arts. You need a personal trainer who will explain you about the training methods and hours of operation. You can also find out his experience as a boxing coach and whether he was a fighter himself at one point. The training involves learning the fundamentals of boxing and ways to get in shape. The trainer will recommend you what kind of training you should start and who would you train with.

Learn the basics yourself

When you start working with a coach, it’s probably a good idea to know the basics of boxing and some of the terminology. It will help you to know a little of what your club mates are talking about. The following are few starters;

  • Jab: This is the busiest punch in boxing. It’s a simple punch thrown to your opponent’s chin with your leading hand (the hand of the forward foot).
  • Cross: This is a punch usually thrown with the dominant hand the instant an opponent leads with his opposite hand. It involves a slight rotation of your torso, simulating a horizontal moment across your plane.
  • Uppercut: This is a punch used in boxing that travels along a vertical line at the opponent’s chin or solar plexus. It is, along with the cross, one of the two main punches that count in the statistics as power punches.
  • Hook: This is a short sideways punch which is performed by turning the core muscles and back, thereby swinging the arm, which is bent at an angle near or at 90 degrees, in a horizontal arc into the opponent.
  • Southpaw: This is a left-handed fighter (either naturally or converted). From a “normal” fighter, they do everything in reverse. Because of their stance differences, they practically fight on top of each other.

Get a professional kit

To become a professional boxers you need a boxing kit which you can carry to training and matches without any difficulties. A boxing kit may contain following equipment’s

  • Boxing Gloves: Boxing gloves are cushioned gloves that fighters wear on their hands during boxing matches and practices. In modern boxing gloves are non-lethal, designed to protect both the opponent’s head and the fighter’s hand during a bout.
  • Punching Bags: A punching bag is a sturdy bag designed to be repeatedly punched. A punching bag is usually cylindrical, and filled with various materials of corresponding hardness.
  • Protective Gears: Before you get in the ring you will need protective head gear, a mouth guard, hand wraps, a supporter and cup, and boxing shoes. The head gear is used by all fighters during training and amateur fighters during bouts.

Grab your state licensure

To fight in a particular state, an amateur boxer might need to obtain a license from that state’s athletic commission; professional boxers always need to be licensed. You will do this by filling out an application and undergoing a physical that ensures you are fit to fight. This is done at the state level through the State Athletic Commission. You also might have to undergo various medical exams, including an EKG, neurological test, and blood work. Other common qualifications for licensure include age, moral character, experience, and reputation.

Start your amateur boxing career

Boxers as young as eight years old can participate in amateur tournaments. These tournaments are held around the country, and boxers are matched up with other fighters in their same age range and weight class. The difference between amateur and pro boxing is that you will be allowed to wear protective headgear. This is essential in the beginning stages of your fighting career in order to prevent potentially fatal injuries while you learn to protect yourself. Performing well in the   amateur tournaments can lead you into bigger tournaments at international levels. Train like a beast in all fighting level, boxers must be in exemplary physical condition and maintain a rigorous training regimen that prepares them to face their competitors.

Now you need a manger

Your manager must have connections to boxing matchmakers who will set you up with fights. Manager acts as boxer’s agent, supervising training, working with matchmakers to find opponents, and negotiating payments for matches. You will now be earning money, but keep in mind that at least 20% of your pay will go to the manager and the matchmaker.

Join professional boxing associations

You will have to join a professional boxing association as International boxing federation (IBF), World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Organization (WBO), or World Boxing Association (WBA) and get a boxer’s license from the boxing commission you will be fighting in. Your ultimate goal should be to win a championship belt. This takes time and diligence, in addition to withstanding injury and defeat.
